With UNESCO’s participation, Education hosts the periodic meeting of the Education and Vocational Training Coordination Group in Iraq.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research hosted the periodic meeting of the Education and Vocational Training Coordination Group (TVET CG) with the participation of UNESCO representatives and several ministries.

Dr. Alaa Abdul Hassan Attia, the ministry’s advisor, affirmed that the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is working in effective partnership with international organizations, institutions, and the European Union to enhance infrastructure and respond to sustainable development requirements. He noted that the ministry and its institutions have accomplished numerous projects that have directly impacted the educational process, particularly within the Bologna process, achieving the highest level of academic quality standards.

In this context, Dr. Salah Al-Fatlawi, the head of the Supervision and Scientific Evaluation Department, emphasized the importance of coordination between universities and specialized organizations in line with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) development project and aligning its programs with the national education strategy in Iraq.

Dr. Hameed Khalef, the head of the Higher Education Development Committee in Iraq, emphasized the necessity of evaluating the effectiveness of donor countries’ projects and programs and activating shared responsibility in enriching educational programs and projects through the establishment of a coordinating committee involving the Kurdistan Region and international organizations.

Mr. Tamer Mayzen, Deputy Senior Education and Vocational Training Advisor at UNESCO, stated that the organization is making clear efforts with the European Union to support the vocational education and training strategy and to continue the work of steering committees dedicated to developing this type of education in Iraq. Additionally, there is support for primary and higher education programs and a shift towards field surveys to identify future labor market needs.

The meeting included an introduction to the National Education Strategy in Iraq (2022-2031), UNESCO programs, and other international organizations working with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, as well as a review of coordination mechanisms among partners in the fields of education and vocational training in Iraq.
