At the University of Karbala, a master’s thesis titled “Underwater Object Detection and Recognition Using Deep Learning” was discussed. The thesis was presented by the student Rudwan Adnan Dakhil Jabr. The defense took place on Thursday, January 25, 2024, in Al-Khwarizmi Hall at the College of Computer Science and Information Technology. The discussion was attended by several researchers and faculty members, including Dr. Mufak Kazem Al-Hasnawi, the Dean, and Dr. Mohsen Hasan Hussein, the Scientific Assistant.

The thesis focused on introducing a new approach for detecting underwater objects using a set of images from the underwater environment (SUIM). It presented a specially designed model based on an integrated encoding and decoding network.

Discussions led to the development of techniques for underwater object detection, contributing to the improvement of underwater scene analysis effectiveness. This positively impacts various fields that rely on underwater scene analysis.

The examination committee included Dr. Bihija Khudhair Shakir as the committee’s chair, with other members being Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Nasser, Dr. Ilham Mohammed Thabit Abdul Amir, and Dr. Ali Rida Husson. The student, Rudwan Adnan Dakhil Jabr, successfully obtained a master’s degree.
