Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi Announces Three Baghdad Sites Cleared of Radioactive Contamination and Upcoming Groundbreaking for Iraq’s First Training Reactor

The President of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, has announced that three sites within the Al-Tuwaitha complex, southeast of Baghdad, have been declared free of radioactive contamination.

In a press conference, Dr. Al-Aboudi explained that the cleared sites include the French LAMA Laboratories, the Italian Radioisotope Production Facility, and the Tammuz-2 Nuclear Research Reactor. He confirmed that these sites underwent comprehensive radiological surveys based on precise scientific methodologies and conducted in partnership with relevant national institutions. The survey results confirmed that no radioactive waste remains at these sites that could pose a risk to public health.

In a related development, the Minister also announced that Iraq is nearing the signing of a strategic agreement with the China Atomic Energy Authority to lay the foundation stone for the country’s first training reactor—a subcritical system reactor. He emphasized that this educational project is intended to enhance the skills of students and researchers in nuclear physics and peaceful radiation technologies.
