In the opening of the National Conference on Green Education, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research emphasized the investment in international partnership with UNESCO to achieve sustainable development goals and address environmental challenges.
During his speech at the opening of the conference, attended by the Acting Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Mr. Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, several parliament members, UNESCO representatives, international organizations, university vice presidents, deans of governmental and private colleges, the Minister stated that Iraq is part of a global partnership with UNESCO in the field of green education. He emphasized that this phase requires moving towards a future based on sustainable work, which must rely on higher education as a vital foundation for achieving development goals and addressing environmental challenges.
The Minister urged Iraqi academic institutions to enhance areas of scientific research, capacity building, and raising awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. He pointed out that this kind of attention stems from the responsibilities of higher education in achieving development goals and dedicating serious efforts to formulate curricula and provide scientific and laboratory resources that form an integrated roadmap to mitigate future challenges.
In this context, the Acting Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Higher Education Committee, Dr. Mazahim Al-Khayat, praised the indicators of scientific development in Iraqi higher education and scientific research institutions, the advancement in global rankings, and the achievement of productive partnerships in the green education environment. Each of the Ministry’s Undersecretary for Scientific Research Affairs, Dr. Haider Abdul Dahd, and UNESCO Representative Mr. Tame Mizoun presented on the paths of sustainable development and the scientific research index in this field.
