Among the distinguished achievements in the field of scientific research, Dr. Miras Salman Al-Shammari, a lecturer at the College of Computer Science and Information Technology, published a collaborative research paper with Prof. Yan Li and Dr. Shihab Abdullah, College of Engineering and Science, University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Australia. The research paper entitled (Detecting Distorted Vehicle License Plates Using Novel Preprocessing Methods with Hybrid Feature Descriptions) was published in the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine. The journal’s research interests include system analysis, image processing, object detection, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity technologies, and Cisco networks.
The main contribution of this research is to introduce new preprocessing methods with hybrid feature descriptors to detect the distorted license plates of vehicles. The research contributed to the development and improvement of the cybersecurity mechanism for smart monitoring systems, especially in the transportation sector.
Dr. Abdulla received the award on behalf of Dr. Miras Al-Shammari. On the University of Southern Queensland website, he referred to the effective role and praised the distinguished individual efforts and perseverance that she presented in this research. It is to be mentioned that this is the third award that she receives during her distinguished research career.
He further stressed the importance of this research academically as well as in addressing the security weaknesses that exist in the current systems while working in bad weather conditions. The distinctive thing about this research is the applicability of the treatment methods in different environments and for various health or security uses such as detecting fires and thefts or for other purposes in vital areas of life
