Dr. Na’im Al-Abboudi, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, inaugurated the proceedings of the international conference on the future of education and vocational training in Iraq in collaboration with UNESCO and the European Union.
In his address during the conference, held from May 15th to 16th, 2024, which focuses on international trends and their compatibility with the national strategy for education and training in Iraq (2022-2031), Dr. Al-Abboudi emphasized the importance of updating educational curricula and training programs, enhancing students’ skills, and continuing cooperation with international organizations to meet global standards.
He stated that the Ministry of Higher Education and its institutions are confidently advancing to keep pace with knowledge changes and the movement of technical skills by developing educational policies and strategies that meet national needs and align with international trends. He highlighted the need for updating curricula and training programs to enhance students’ skills and prepare them for active engagement in the local and global job markets.
The Minister further noted that Iraqi universities specializing in technical fields have focused their efforts on revitalizing the technical and vocational education sector, which forms the backbone of developing human resources and capacities, crucial for supporting the national economy. Thus, the national strategy for education and training in Iraq includes a pivotal goal of integrating theory and practice, promoting innovation and creativity through applied education, which serves as a catalyst for sustainable development.
The conference included extensive academic participation and representation from Iraqi technical universities. Speeches were delivered by the Ministry of Education, the Executive Director of the Higher Education Development Committee in the Prime Minister’s Office, a representative from the Kurdistan Region, as well as representatives from the European Union and UNESCO in Iraq. Sessions highlighted Sustainable Development Goals related to technical and vocational education, UNESCO’s strategy for training and education, development pathways, and key strategic directions for education and training in Iraq, digital transformation in education and training in Iraq, and responsible practices for linking with the job market.
