Dr. Najm Abdul-Hussein Al-Janabi, Assistant President of Karbala University, received a number of members of the committee in charge of reviving the Tar Caves in Karbala, in preparation for their inclusion in the world’s geoparks.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Karbala Operations Command, the Department of Tourism, the Karbala Municipalities Directorate and the Department of Antiquities in the province.
According to Dr. Najm Al-Janabi, Al-Tar Caves are among the candidate areas to be among the world’s geoparks, provided that a number of international standards are met.
Al-Janabi expressed his hope that the concerned government agencies have plans to meet the international standards set by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
It is noteworthy that Karbala University previously hosted a scientific workshop organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research with the participation of the Ministry of Education, the Iraqi National Committee for Education, Culture and Science and the Arab League’s Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science, in the presence of Arab and foreign researchers and specialists, as part of the steps to include the Tar Caves area in the world’s geoparks.
