The College of Computer Science and Information Technology at the University of Karbala held a discussion for the master’s thesis titled “Image Cryptography System Based on Blockchain Using SHA-256 and MD5”, submitted by graduate student Fatima Raed Rahman, at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 1, 2025.
The defense took place in the Al-Khwarizmi Hall at the College of Computer Science and Information Technology, in the presence of the President of the University of Karbala, Dr. Sabah Wajid Ali, the Dean of the College, Dr. Mowafaq Kazem Al-Hasnawi, along with a number of researchers and faculty members.
The study aimed to enhance the security of digital images, accelerate their processing, and prevent tampering by proposing a new framework for image encryption. The framework integrates concepts inspired by blockchain technology and hashing algorithms (MD5, SHA-256, SHA-512) to secure large-sized images and improve scalability.
The thesis recommended adopting the proposed system in the field of protecting sensitive digital images, given its distinguished ability to combine security, efficiency, and speed.
The discussion committee consisted of:
- Assistant Professor Dr. Huda Abdul-Aali Abdul-Baqi / Al-Mustansiriyah University / College of Science – Chair
- Assistant Professor Dr. Elham Mohammed Thabet / University of Karbala / College of Computer Science and Information Technology – Member
- Lecturer Dr. Mohi Murtadha Mohi / University of Karbala / College of Education for Human Sciences – Member
- Professor Dr. Baheija Khudair Shukr / University of Karbala / College of Computer Science and Information Technology – Member and Supervisor
- Assistant Professor Dr. Mai Abdul-Munim Saleh / University of Babylon / College of Information Technology – Member
The defense concluded successfully, with the researcher Fatima Raed Rahman being awarded the Master’s degree.
