Renowned Iraqi Scientist Delivers Lecture on Sustainable Development at the University of Karbala

The University of Karbala hosted a scientific lecture on the role of science and technology in achieving sustainable development, delivered by renowned Iraqi scientist Professor Adel Sharif Al-Husseini.

The lecture addressed the critical importance of science and technology in confronting various climate and environmental challenges—across energy, water, food, and health sectors—highlighting the advantages of technology such as speed, impartiality, and low error rates.

Sharif emphasized that leveraging technology in problem-solving reduces complexity and offers fast, effective solutions.

He also discussed the role of artificial intelligence in providing valuable insights toward sustainable development, aiming to build a society free from poverty, disease, and other obstacles that hinder sustainable progress.

Sharif revealed plans to collaborate with the University of Karbala on projects related to water, environment, and energy.

Professor Adel Sharif is considered one of the most prominent scientists in both Iraq and globally. He holds 25 patents and has received the Queen’s Award for Water Research in the UK.

He obtained both his master’s and doctoral degrees from Swansea University in the UK and currently holds several positions, including Scientific Advisor to the Iraq Development Fund at the Council of Ministers and Professor at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

For his part, the University President, Professor Dr. Sabah Wajid Ali, praised the participation of Iraqi scientists in sharing their experiences and success stories with the University of Karbala, emphasizing the importance of fostering a climate of academic exchange. He also invited the guest to represent the university informally in international scientific forums.

The event was attended by the university’s vice presidents for administrative and academic affairs, Professor Dr. Jasem Idan Al-Mamouri and Professor Dr. Haider Mohammed Omran, along with several college deans, academics, staff, and students.
