College of Computer Science Discusses Master’s Thesis Titled “Emotion Detection in Arabic Social Media Texts Using Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing”

The College of Computer Science and Information Technology at the University of Karbala held a master’s thesis defense titled “Emotion Detection in Arabic Social Media Texts Using Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing”, presented by graduate student Zakaria Hussein Ali.

The defense took place at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2025, in the Al-Khwarizmi Hall at the College of Computer Science and Information Technology, with the presence of the Dean, Dr. Mowafaq Kadhim Al-Hasnawi, as well as several researchers and faculty members.

The study aimed to contribute to Arabic Natural Language Processing (NLP) by proposing a scalable and effective method for detecting emotions in written Arabic texts. The research recommended a hybrid deep learning approach based on LSTM and BERT models to enhance emotion classification, particularly in Iraqi dialect social media content.

The examination committee consisted of:

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Hiba Jabbar Abdul Wahid – Al-Zahraa University, College of Information Technology Engineering (Member and Supervisor)

The defense concluded successfully, and Zakaria Hussein Ali was awarded the degree of Master of Science.
